Aside

Saturday December 15th 2012

First of all, I just heard about the shooting in Newtown, CT!! My thoughts an prayers go out to them, I am so so sad to hear of such a tragedy. Ugh terrible. And scary that the past two shootings have been where I go to school and then where I live. So so sad. God bless them.

We got back from retreat this morning. It was a lot better than I expected. We did some rock climbing, a tight ropes course, played volleyball, they had a slackline which I thoroughly enjoyed, and we roasted marsh mellows 2 out of the three nights. It was actually a really good way to end the trip. Last night we had a mandatory talent show which was hilarious!!! Mostly because none of us are very talented. haha well thats not entirely true, but there were some pretty funny acts. My friend Arielle and I have performed a poem at the end of every country so we just did another one of our poems. We did one line about everyone on the program, it turned out really well. We got a good laugh out of everyone.

So today we went back to Biscuit Mill for lunch, and we’re about to go climb Lions Head. Tomorrow I hope to go to church then stop at my Bo Kaap fams house on the way home. Then I’m not really sure, where see where the world brings me. Probably shopping, the world seems to bring me there a lot. Oh my goodness and then the day after that I go homeeeeee! I realized today that it is only ten day until Christmas!!! What??! Thats crazy! And so exciting!!

Some Unexpected Fun

Our bus will be here in half and hour to take us out of Bo Kaap.. noooo!!! I am so sad to leave! I adore my family here. They remind me a lot of my family at home. They have been so welcoming and even in such a short period of time I really feel like they have welcomed me in as their own.

I had such a good weekend!!! Saturday morning Emily and I powered up Table Mountain. We wanted to take the cable car down because we were so tired but neither of us had enough money. So in a huff we walked down. Our legs were shaking by the time we got to the bottom, both of us had no energy to find a cab or bus or really any mode of transportation to take us home. Luckily we found this hippy dude taxi driver who took us home for pretty cheap. On the way home we were talking about going to the beach and the taxi driver offered to wait for us then take us to the beach. So that worked out well.  Got to Clifton Beach, so tired, so sore, pretty sluggish. Don’t really know where we are but, typical Cape Town, it is so so so beautiful.

So!!! Here is where the story gets interesting!!! We’re both sittin on the beach, pretty much dead, and this group of simply beautiful people walk down the beach with a banner advertising something and are handing out wristbands- this beautiful man walks up to Emily and I and is like do you guys want to come party at the Reserve tonight, we were like uh, mayybeee? So he gives us each one and a couple extra for our friends. Ok so we go home, later that night I’m like Emily I’m so tired, really think I just want to stay in, my brother overhears us talking about going to this party at The Reserve and he’s like oh you gotta go there, and you have wristbands!! So I’m like ok ok we can check it out. Then! my brother is like I know this guy who might be going, so he calls this guy, hangs up and is like ok he’ll pick you up at 10:30. I was like hold up!! What am I getting myself into, my brother was like no no this dude’s cool, really friendly…. oh and he’s a model. WHAT?! and he said to be sure to doll yourself up. HAH. I’ve been living out of a suitcase for the past four months, “dolling myself up” is a lot harder than it sounds. So whatever, I do my best, Emily and I are just kinda putzin around like this could be absolutely amazing or a huge disaster. The guy shows up, and holy crow, yup he’s a model. So handsome. He brings us to The Reserve, we thought we were going to be like “oh dont worry we can get you in free with our wristbands.” PSH! We get there he cuts the line and the door guy literally unhooks the red velvet rope to let us through- JUST like in the movies. Turns out- it is a party of models HAHA Emily, who is just as weird as me, and I are a full two feet shorter and 20 pounds heavier than everyone else in the building HAHAHA. Then of course, once the bar tender realizes we are with this model guy who picked us up, we get free drinks for the rest of the night. Wow. that is definitely a night I was not expecting.

Sunday morning I went back to the same church for the Second Sunday of advent!!!! YAYYYYY. I’ve been playing Christmas music everyday!!!! Although the 90 degree weather isn’t helping the mood.

Sunday afternoon went to Flugtag, the Redbull event. That was really funny, and really fun to watch. But we were super tired and had a lot of hw to do, so only stayed for a couple hours. The past week has been filled with work work work. Ugh where are my model friends. lol lets be honest I didn’t fit in that crowd at ALL.

Off to retreat for the next couple days, then back to Cape Town for the weekend, then HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so ready for home. I miss my Abs!!!

I’m falling behind on my posts!! But fear not!! I am having a great, great time. Cape Town is so beautiful!!! Bo Kaap, where I am staying is known for its colored houses so it is very very cute. Kind of like if you painted the houses of Georgetown pink, orange, green, and blue. That kind of cute. I have seen many photoshoots walking to and from class (class is about 5 houses down from mine). I wonder if they are told what color to paint their house or if they all just work together? Because if you want your house to be lime green but your neighbor just painted theirs lime green, you can’t have two lime green houses in a row, so what do you do? I guess just hope you have good neighbors that like different colors that you.

Last weekend we went to Old Biscuit Mill on Saturday. I literally died and went to heaven the shopping was so good. Every store had the CUTEST things. All I bought was a magnet that says “I’ve never been a millionaire but I just know I’d be darling at it.” Lol. Went for a nice long run after Biscuit Mill. Found the most amazing place to run right along the water with some of the most beautiful scenery.

Sunday I went to a Catholic English speaking church which was refreshing. Oh! there was a very funny story in the bulletin— This dad would listen to his little daughter say her prayers every night. She would pray for everyone in the family, pets included, and end with “and all the girls.” This became routine and he always wondered why she ended that way. So one night he asked her “Hannah, why do you always end with “all the girls?” And she responded, “Because everyone else always finishes with “all men.” HAHAHAHA I thought that was great.

After church I stopped in at a classic car dealership. A huge one, dad would have died. I talked to the guy for a while, he drives an Audi A3 everyday and an MGA for fun. He told me to come back and he’ll give me a ride in one of the cars….. he’s 24 hahaha. Rule number one- never get in a car with strangers.

Later on Sunday we went to Camps Bay and hung around there for a while, again an absolutely beautiful place. There are a couple options for next weekend- Table Mountain, Cliffton Beach, Robbin Island, we’ll see.

Can’t wait to come home for Christmas!!!! God bless you and “all the girls!”

We have made it to Bo Kaap! My homestay family is very nice. They have three boys- 31, 28, and 21. Oldest brother seems the coolest, most down to earth. The middle brother got married YESTERDAY! So everyone is still winding down from that. And the youngest brother just had a big party for his birthday. The family as a whole seems really cool. The dad is a metal worker and has a workshop at home. The oldest brother works with him as a welder. He said he is trying to get into furniture. I saw some pictures of their work- it is very nice! Overall seems like a pretty good set up.

Today we got a guided walking tour of Bo Kaap, then had lunch with our homestays and moved in and had the rest of the day to ourselves. Molly, my new roomie, and I walked Long Street (kinda like the 5th Ave of Cape Town), then walked to the marina. There is great shopping, very rich people, and very big boats.

Tomorrow is December!! Happy Holidays!!!
